Your Google rating is the average of every star rating you’ve received. To raise it, each new review has to be above your current average, and a 5-star review moves it the most.
Google rounds your average to one decimal. A 4.75 average already displays as 4.8, so the calculator aims for the lowest average that shows your target, not the exact number.
Your displayed rating is itself rounded, so treat the result as a close estimate. The more reviews you have, the more precise it gets.
People compare ratings side by side in Maps. The jump from 4.4 to 4.7 often decides who gets the click, and many shoppers filter out anything under 4.0 without reading a word.
Review count matters too. A business with 300 reviews at 4.7 looks safer than one with 12 reviews at 4.9, and every new review also tells Google your listing is active.

That takes about 8 months at 8 new reviews a month, if they’re all 5 stars.
One 1-star review would drop your average to 4.44. It takes 7 five-star reviews to win that back.
